After a lot of hard work, the first release of Dates is now ready - Source tarballs, Ubuntu packages, Debian packages and Nokia 770 packages are all available, check out the OpenedHand project page for details.
Many thanks go to Tomas Frydrych for work on the Maemo port, Mark Florian for extensive testing, Ulisse Perusin for work on an icon (that wasn't used, unfortunately), Ross Burton for work/help on the debian packaging and finally my boss, Matthew Allum for employing me and guiding me towards making what I think is a pretty awesome app :)
Finally, some screenshots:
Enjoy, and remember there's a
bugzilla for any bugs you find!

Could the toolbar go at the top on the Gnome version?
MDK says:
Is it possible (or in the roadmap) to sync with google calendar?
Phrodo_00 says:
yay!... great! this is really nice, although I agree with end user... ¿why not to use toolbar instead of all those buttons...?. btw, this reminded me of something... I've always thought gnome needs to have a mail client separated from the calendar and separated from the contact list, yet integrated between them (with the nifty features of creating an appointment from a mail, mailing your contacts and so on). Evolution is a little bit of overkill for a normal desktop user. I think it should still be developed as "complete groupare solution", but the default for gnome should be more simple. Maybe this is a start, it would be great to make a tweaked gnome clock that used appointments form here instead of evolution.
Phrodo_00 says:
btw, don't mind about the clock thing, I saw it uses evolution-data-server...

A row of buttons is not a toolbar. Please do use a standard toolbar (apologies if you are using a real toolbar with an unusual theme but it looks distinctly like a row of buttons).
Looks like a great new application and I'm sure more than a few users will be happy to use this on more than just Maemo.
Chris Lord says:
Alan H - I'm quite aware that a row of buttons is not a toolbar, the layout is deliberate.
Thanks for the positive comments though guys, I'll do my best to improve this app further :)
MDK - Google Calendar support is something that needs to be supported by evolution-data-server, and as far as I know, there are people working on it - so fingers crossed...

Will there be a way to sync with eds on anther computer? This would be great.

Looking great so far -- very much looking forward to webcal support so I can view my gmail calendar. Above, were you talking about /write/ support for gmail (which is a work-in-progress) or were you talking about /read/ support? For read support, all that is needed would be webcal:// support in dates/eds.
I tried editing gconf on the maemo to add my web calendar, since it shows up on my desktop, but mainly just broke things. I couldn't tell if it was my stupidity (editing gconf by hand is bad) or if the feature doesn't exist yet in dates.
At any rate, keep up the good work and thanks for the beautiful interface!
Brett Nash says:
Hate to be the sour puss... but the package files for debian are empty. (See http://debian.o-hand.com/unstable/).
/me goes back to SVN version
Robert Mibus says:
Dates already supports webcal, assuming you've already set up the calendars in Evolution.
Chris Lord says:
Brett - Yes, sorry, debian packages will be appearing in Debian unstable soon (if not already), not in our own repository.
Chris - eds-dbus calendar doesn't support webcals (it causes deadlock and they time-out opening), yet, so webcals work on the desktop only. And yes, I meant write-support :)
Smoker says:
Congrats, looks great.

Hi Chris, Tried to add the maemo repo to my 770 but get a unable to refresh list error. I think its because I don't think I have the components configured problems. On the http://maemo.o-hand.com/ page it doesn't list the components option. Can you help.
-SF- says:
Peter,
Web address: http://maemo.o-hand.com/packages
Distribution: mistral/
Components:
Components is indeed empty but if you forget / after mistral distribution it doesn't work.
Here it works (after adding / ;) )
And Thanks a lot Chris for all your work !!!

Hello! Fine piece of software. I have one tiny bug report, but I am too lazy to register yet another bugzilla account for this:
When creating a new event, the text in "summary" is "new event". I would like to have this text pre-selected, or no text at all with a cursor in the text entry, so that I can start typing right away the name of the event, instead of selecting each time. Thanks!
Any comments?
