So, I've pretty much finished with all uni work now and I must say, I'm extremely relieved... For any students in the UK thinking of doing a masters in Computer Science, I'd urge them to reconsider - It definitely isn't worth it, the effort you have to put in compared to the bachelors is enormous. The last year of work made the first three years look like a joke.
Anyway, enough moaning, thought I'd blog about the last project I handed in, 'Interactive Entertainment Systems' (i.e. 'Computer Games'). The project was to build a game and write a report about the design/implementation. A colleague and I built a physics-based driving/demolition game we've titled 'Domino Blast'. A picture is worth a thousand words, so:
I'd like to think it's quite fun :) Links:
Ubuntu Feisty packages:
The source compiles on both Linux and Windows. Notable dependencies: ODE, libmodelfile (aka libmd3). I'll see about uploading Ubuntu feisty packages later today/tomorrow.
[Update] Ubuntu Feisty packages available (see above).

Quick note - your configure.ac file doesn't test for the presence of SDL/SDL.h or SDL/SDL_image.h - installing the libsdl-dev and libsdl-image1.2-dev fix it, but it would be nice to have a configure test, too.

cool stuff, got till level 5 or something. figured the use of enter and space keys :) pretty dark though!
nice work!

Concerning the "physics" part maybe a "sticks and stones" physics solution would be better....

Richard: Thanks, I'll fix that if/when there's a 0.2 :)
Kn: That's very interesting... I don't know whether that approach is faster for as simple a simulation as this, but it'd definitely be worth looking into at some point, thanks for the link.

Finished my masters degree about a year ago, about 8 years after starting it! (took a few years out on the way)
Personally I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand it was a lot of work, and I finished a lot later than if I had done a bachelors degree. On the other hand I have a higher class of degree with a good result which puts me a little ahead, also I had good fun in university clubs in that time :)
... and now I shall try out this game, looks interesting :)

Chris Lord: ODE is definitely faster for this.
Anyway, ODE simulates rigid bodies, while RoR simulates deformable objects. So if you don't need deformation, ODE should be absolutely fine for your game IMO.

I compiled the game, it's cool idea. Ppl always like to destroy things. (;
One thing, that the game is awfully slow in some levels (my cpu @ 2.4 ghz).
Next thing, I see a problem with floor texture. It blinks all the time.
And last one: The game is titled `Domino Blast` so the source/package should be something similar, I think...

Wow, that's a wonderful idea for a game! Please keep developing and polishing it!! I wrote a little post about it will be online in a few days http://www.gnuvox.info (in Italian :) )
